Our new hive in southeastern Minnesota sits on a beautiful 150 acre farm. The hive is protected from wind by a grove of pine trees, and overlooks a rolling pasture that is home to dairy cattle, chickens, and ducks. The primary production of the farm is grain crop, which is organically raised for the Organic Valley brand of dairy products. Our friends operate a small plot of vegetables for the local market and are also caring for the bees.
Today we are moving our center colony of Italian bees to our friends' organic farm in southeastern Minnesota! After dark, once the bees have returned to their hive for the night, we will brace the hive together to prevent an in-transit catastrophe (wearing a beekeeper's suit in the car is optional). We will then unload and set up the hive during the middle of the night. Tomorrow morning, the bees will wake up to a new frontier of clover and pastureland.
